Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR)

• DSEAR risk assessment: Identify dangerous substances, ignition sources and credible release scenarios that could create explosive atmospheres, with a prioritised action plan.

• Hazardous area classification (HAC): Define Zones 0/1/2 and 20/21/22 with plans/drawings for gas, vapour and dust risks, and guidance for safe equipment selection and ways of working.

• Controls hierarchy: Apply elimination or substitution first, then engineering and procedural controls; specify suitable protective equipment only where needed.

• Training and awareness: Brief managers and operators on safe storage and handling, housekeeping, spill response and emergency actions.

• Integrated fire safety: Align DSEAR zoning and ignition controls with your fire risk management strategy and emergency plans to maintain consistent protection.

DSEAR applies to many everyday activities where flammable gases, vapours, mists or combustible dusts could cause fire or explosion. Typical settings and operations include:

• Petrol and diesel storage or dispensing facilities
• Paint mixing, coating and spraying operations
