Our team, formerly part of Baily Garner (Health & Safety), was appointed by Clarion Housing Group to provide Principal Designer support during the regeneration of the Grade II listed London Chest Hospital site in Bethnal Green.
The £57.7 million project will restore the historic hospital building and introduce several sensitively designed new residential blocks, all set within a mature landscape. The scheme will reopen the historic lawn to the public for the first time and protect key heritage features including the site’s rare Black Mulberry tree.
Coordinating risk in a heritage context
Now at RIBA Stage 2, we have worked closely with the client and design team to identify and manage health and safety risks through design risk appraisal meetings and regular updates to the CDM Compliance Report. Our reviews have focused on buildability, long-term maintenance access and the refurbishment of large ornate features on the existing façade.
We have also provided guidance on safe roof access solutions and mitigation strategies for manual handling during restoration works. Special attention has been given to tree protection measures for the ancient Mulberry specimen during construction.
Supporting safe, sustainable transformation
As the project moves toward planning submission, we continue to provide practical, proportionate advice to help duty holders meet their legal responsibilities. We’re proud to be part of the team working to transform this historically significant site into a vibrant and sustainable residential setting for the future.
