The British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) has published updated guidance for working in reduced oxygen atmospheres. The guidance provides advice to installers and premises owners where these systems are, or are about to be, fitted, helping to ensure the safety of those who need to access such spaces.

Where might reduced oxygen levels be found?

Workplaces where you may encounter reduced levels of oxygen include confined spaces such as:

  • Tanks
  • Silos
  • Tunnels
  • Sewers
  • Underground vaults

These low oxygen levels may exist naturally, result from chemical reactions, or be deliberately created – for example, to preserve produce or reduce fire risks in storage environments.

Hazards of reduced oxygen atmospheres

The key risks associated with low oxygen levels include:

  • Hypoxia (oxygen deficiency)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Respiratory and cardiovascular problems
  • Asphyxiation

Precautions to keep people safe

When working in reduced oxygen environments, the following control measures should be considered:

  • Ensure proper ventilation to maintain oxygen levels and prevent the build-up of gases that may displace oxygen.
  • Provide suitable personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Implement strict confined space entry procedures, including pre-entry air testing, continuous monitoring, and the presence of trained rescue personnel.
  • Use a permit-to-work system to control access and ensure safe procedures are followed.
