HSENI targets worker health in food production sector
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has launched a new inspection and advisory campaign focused on improving health standards across the agri-food industry. The initiative involves direct visits to food production sites across Northern Ireland.
Campaign focus areas
HSENI inspectors are engaging with employers and workers to identify and address key health risks. Focus areas include:
- Managing stress in high-pressure production environments
- Protecting lung health from airborne contaminants
- Preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) linked to repetitive tasks and poor manual handling
- Addressing hazards specific to food production, such as chemical exposure
The aim is to promote best practices, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and encourage long-term cultural improvements in workplace health.
Hazardous substances in food production
A key part of the campaign addresses safe handling of chemicals and food additives. HSENI encourages businesses to adopt the following good practices:
1. Identification
List and label all hazardous substances in use — including cleaning agents, disinfectants and processing chemicals.
2. Risk assessment
Conduct detailed assessments to identify how these substances could affect workers’ health.
3. Control measures
- Use local exhaust ventilation (LEV) where appropriate
- Ensure safe storage and clear labelling
- Provide and enforce use of suitable PPE
4. Monitoring
Track exposure levels and regularly review the effectiveness of controls.
5. Training
Make sure all workers are trained to handle substances safely and understand the associated health risks.
