The Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), together with the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), has published an updated code of practice for the selection of building hardware for use on fire-resisting and escape door assemblies and door sets.
The term door hardware covers a wide range of fittings, such as hinges, door-closing devices, locks and latches, door bolts, fire safety signs, fire and smoke seals, and panic and emergency exit devices. Several of these play a critical role in ensuring that fire doors remain closed during emergencies—limiting the spread of fire and protecting escape routes.
The new guidance has been updated to reflect recent legislation and technological advances. It is relevant for building owners, fire safety managers, designers, and hardware manufacturers and suppliers.
Key Updates in the New Code
- Access control and electronic locks: Ensuring that security systems do not hinder emergency evacuation.
- Mechatronic door furniture: Including devices with integrated electronic readers and digital keys.
- Electrically controlled exit systems: Used in care or childcare settings to restrict exit for safety while ensuring emergency access.
The updated code is available for free download from the Firecode website.
