New rigging guidance for mobile and crawler cranes

The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA), through its Crane Interest Group (CIG), has released updated guidance on the safe rigging of cranes. Known as CPA CIG 2506, the document introduces a structured approach to pre-use checks and aims to enhance existing crane safety processes.

Purpose of the guidance

This guidance does not replace existing procedures but is designed to reduce the risk of rigging errors, particularly during high-risk crane operations. It provides a practical framework that can be integrated into site-specific lifting plans and risk assessments.

“Ready for work” checks

CPA CIG 2506 sets out a list of essential checks that must be completed by crane operators:

  • Before operations begin
  • Immediately after rigging
  • When taking over a previously rigged crane
  • Following any work break or handover

The checks are designed to ensure the crane is configured correctly and matches the agreed lift plan. They also help verify that no unauthorised or unnoticed changes have occurred since the previous lift.
