The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has published a camping safety leaflet offering essential tips for staying safe during camping-related activities.
The leaflet outlines a list of basic tips to consider before heading out to camp. These include checking the weather forecast, packing the correct supplies, and ensuring the correct emergency procedures are in place. RoSPA also makes a point of highlighting that portable beds for children should be purchased based on the product’s stated age group and that 2-in-1 airbeds/sleeping bags are not suitable for babies due to the risk of suffocation.
The leaflet also offers more in-depth advice on common risks associated with campsite locations, campfires, cooking and carbon monoxide. Specific hazards highlighted include:
- Rising water levels near campsites
- Falling branches or rocks near campsites
- Campfires (and keeping them under control)
- Pressurised camping gas
- Carbon monoxide poisoning, in particular using cooking equipment inside enclosed spaces with poor ventilation
Overall, the leaflet is a useful guide to anyone starting out camping and is a particularly valuable resource for introducing and educating younger audiences about the potential dangers of camping.
