New safety guidance from the Construction Plant Association
The Construction Plant Association (CPA) has released three updated or new guidance documents to support safer plant operation on construction sites. Topics include lifting in high winds, concrete pumping, and human detection systems for mobile plant.
Lifting operations in wind
This new publication explains how wind affects cranes and suspended loads. It provides practical advice on:
- Planning lifts in windy conditions
- When to take cranes out of service due to wind
- Safe reinstatement after adverse weather
Updated guidance for concrete pump use
The updated guide outlines minimum safety standards for operating concrete pumps. It includes updated sections on:
- Choosing the right pump and supplier
- Cleaning and maintaining pipelines
- Road transport requirements
- Skills and responsibilities of the workforce
New guidance on human form recognition systems (HFRS)
Machine-mounted HFRS are designed to detect pedestrians who may enter the danger zone around moving plant. While physical segregation is best, this isn’t always practical — for example, during maintenance or lifting operations.
The new guidance offers practical advice on:
- Choosing appropriate detection systems
- System limitations and false positives
- Integrating HFRS with existing site safety procedures
