The Construction Plant Association (CPA) has recently published three new or updated guidance documents.
Lifting Operations in Wind
This is a new publication that looks at how wind affects cranes and loads. The guidance looks at measures for controlling a load safely, planning operations, when to take a crane out of service due to high winds and putting the crane back in service.
Guidance for the Use of Concrete Pumps
This existing guide covers minimum requirements for operating many types of concrete pump, including sections on selecting suitable pumps, managing the operation, cleaning the equipment, and the skills required by the personnel involved. The guide has been updated to include a new section on the selection of concrete pump suppliers, more information on pipeline cleaning and maintenance and clarifications on road transport requirements.
Use of Machine-Mounted Human Form Recognition Systems (HFRS)
Collisions between mobile construction plant and pedestrians can cause serious or even fatal injuries, so it is important that systems are in place to segregate pedestrians and plant where practical. However, segregation is not always possible, for example, where someone needs to approach an item of plant to carry out work, e.g., slinging a load or carrying out maintenance, etc.
This new guide looks at the development of technology and the use of sensors to detect when a person may have entered a danger area.
