The HSE has become aware of issues involving the types of motorised height-adjustable display screen stands often used in schools and other educational establishments.

One issue involves the risk of crush or impact injuries if a fixed riser column detaches from the floor or a supporting wall and falls forward. The combined weight of these units (including the riser column, frame and screen) can be up to 150 kg and poses the risk of serious injuries if the unit were to strike someone.

Another issue involves crushing injuries between the bottom edge of the display screen and any fixed object that is in the path of motorised movement.

The HSE has issued a safety alert which identifies that there is a higher risk when:

  • Children can access the controls.
  • Stability relies on the floor and/or wall fixings with the centre of gravity of the combined riser column, mounting frame and display screen leaning forward.]
  • The means of fixing to the wall or floor are unsuitable to support the unit in normal use.
  • Floor and wall fixings and other mounting components are damaged or overloaded – this can occur when the column motor applies significant force and there are no sensors or devices installed to limit power or detect a collision.
  • There are no sensors or devices installed to limit power or detect a collision and reverse the motor (a risk of crushing between the bottom edge of the screen and fixed objects can also arise).

Finally, a risk of overturning has also been identified with mobile trolley-mounted units.

The HSE are asking users of this equipment to assess and manage the risks, in particular:

  • Ensuring they are only operated by authorised persons.
  • Keeping controllers away from children.
  • Regularly checking to ensure fixings are in good condition.
  • Ensuring the devices are positioned to avoid trapping and crushing hazards.
  • Installing devices to detect and stop or reverse movement if an obstruction is encountered when moving the screen.
