We have previously reported on Government plans to improve road safety by making it illegal to fit tyres aged 10 years or older to the front wheels of lorries, buses and coaches and to any wheels of minibuses.

The Government recently announced that these measures will come into force from February 2021. From that date, it will become illegal to fit tyres aged 10 years or older to:
• The front axle of a goods vehicle with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3,500 kg
• The front axle of a bus or coach – including minibuses
• The rear axle of a minibus with single rear wheels fitted

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced that tyres that are aged 10 years and older and tyres that do not display a date code will become a failure item at the annual test. Also if such tyres are found during roadside vehicle checks inspectors will be issuing prohibition notices.
