The HSE in Northern Ireland (HSENI) and several other bodies set up the Farm Safe Partnership to promote safety on farms in Northern Ireland.

Last year this body launched Farm Safe Essentials as part of the 2020-2023 Farm Safety Action Plan. Farm Safe Essentials promotes key actions and simple precautions which every farmer should employ to protect themselves and others from injury and harm.

To date four campaigns have been launched, these are:

  1. Check your brakes – making sure that brakes, including handbrakes, are well maintained and applied when stopping vehicles.
  2. Plan safe spaces – highlighting precautions to take when working with and around bulls
  3. Give slurry space – highlighting the hazards of slurry gas
  4. Stay off roofs – ensuring that working at height is properly planned and carried out using the correct equipment

Full details of these messages and further guidance can be found on the HSENI website at: https://www.hseni.gov.uk/essentials

Separately a FarmSafeNet website provides an online learning tool to promote farm safety awareness https://www.farmsafenet.org/default.asp

While these resources are specifically targeted at farming in Northern Ireland the messages will also be relevant to the agricultural sector in other regions.

Please speak to your normal PIB Risk Management contact or get in touch using [email protected]  if you have any questions about agricultural safety.
