HSE issues safety alert for motorised display screens
The HSE has issued a warning about motorised height-adjustable display screen stands, especially those used in schools and education settings. Some units pose a serious crush risk if not properly secured or maintained.
What’s the hazard?
Two key risks have been identified:
- Crush or impact injuries if the riser column detaches from its floor or wall fixings and falls forward — some units can weigh up to 150 kg.
- Crushing hazards if the screen moves downwards and hits a fixed object — especially if no safety sensors are fitted.
High-risk scenarios identified
The HSE highlights elevated risk where:
- Children can access and operate the controls
- The unit’s stability depends on inadequate wall/floor fixings
- Fixings or mounting components are damaged or overloaded
- No collision detection or safety cut-off mechanisms are fitted
Mobile trolley-mounted versions may also be at risk of toppling.
What actions should schools and users take?
HSE recommends the following measures to reduce the risk of injury:
- Restrict screen operation to trained and authorised users only
- Keep remote controls or keypads out of reach of children
- Inspect and test fixings regularly for signs of damage or wear
- Position units to avoid crush hazards during movement
- Install safety devices that detect collisions and stop or reverse the motor
Who is affected?
This alert is particularly relevant to schools, SEN environments, care settings and any workplace where motorised screens are used. Risk levels are higher where people may be unable to react quickly to unexpected movement.
