The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has announced that in Autumn 2022 they will be carrying out inspections at quarries in Northern Ireland specifically looking at the use of workplace transport issues.

While safety at quarries has significantly improved in recent years HSENI has recognised that workplace transport continues to be an area that is responsible for high numbers of fatalities and major injuries in the workplace.

The inspectors will be targeting 3 key areas considered the most significant for managing transport safety.

Site Safety

  • Traffic management plans
  • Segregation of pedestrians and vehicles
  • Suitable edge protection
  • Designated pedestrian routes

Vehicle Safety

  • Measures to ensure vehicle visibility
  • Procedures for pre-use checks
  • Daily brake testing
  • Examinations of lifting vehicles

Driver Safety

  • Drivers have the correct licenses and certificates
  • Driver refresher training
  • Measures to prevent falls from height during sheeting and loading

During their inspections HSENI will also be providing advice and information about managing vehicles safely, as with other HSE inspection campaigns enforcement action will be taken on sites where significant risks are found
