In year 1 it was claimed that employment tribunal claims had doubled since the abolition of fees, even though the official figures at the time indicated only a 64% increase. The Government’s latest quarterly tribunal statistics for England and Wales for 1 January to 31 March 2018, show that the number of claims lodged by a single claimant has increased 118% compared with the same quarter in 2017. It remains to be seen for how long this upward trend will continue.
Average awards. Between 2017/ 2018 the average award made by the tribunal for a successful claim was as follows;
- £15,007 for unfair dismissal
- £24,322 for race discrimination
- £13,212 for sex discrimination
- £30,698 for disability discrimination
