The HSE has launched a campaign of inspections targeting manufacturing businesses that use metalworking fluids or coolants in their machining processes. The inspections will take place from October 2023 to March 2024 and will primarily be focused on looking at how employers protect their employees from exposure to fluid or mist generated by CNC machines. Additionally, the HSE will be checking to see if regular and effective health checks are in place.
The HSE has pointed to three key areas where manufacturers often struggle regarding metalworking fluid safety, these being:
- Not having local exhaust ventilation (LEV) in place to carry away any harmful mists.
- Not completing regular fluid quality checks means checking fluid in terms of concentration, pH level, bacteria, and contaminants, as fluid systems can become contaminated with dangerous bacteria.
- Not providing regular health checks for lung and skin conditions; this will usually be in the form of health surveillance and will involve an occupational health professional.
Further information on how to manage the risks associated with the use of metalworking fluids can be found on the HSE’s campaign website.
