The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has launched a new trailer safety accreditation scheme.

Under the scheme, DVSA are recognising expert organisations who will approve individual trainers to provide courses following learning to drive a car and trailer syllabus developed by DVSA and industry experts.

It is understood that a variety of courses will be available covering large and small trailers and specific types of trailers including caravans and horseboxes.

While the focus is on providing training for drivers before they first tow a trailer, the scheme can also be used by drivers who tow regularly or who are returning to towing.

More information about the scheme can be found on the Gov.Uk website at: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/drivers-urged-to-get-training-to-tow-trailers-and-caravans-safely

Where you have employees who drive for work it is important that they have the right skills and expertise for their role, which includes ensuring they are provided with suitable information, instruction, and training, including refresher training. Simply checking that someone holds the correct licence may not be sufficient, especially if they are new to towing.
